New Year's Eve Tradition

Today is New Year's Eve. I totally forgot or never thought about making traditional Japanese New Year foods until Asuka emailed me pictures of my family eating them yesterday... I think I will try to bring in some Japanese tradition this year so that Madison can experience them even though she won't be able to appreciate them yet... So this morning I left Dave and Madison playing together at home and braved outside in the snow to Katagiri(Japanese grocery store) on 59th to purchase necessary ingredients for Toshikoshi Soba to eat tonight and Ozouni to eat tomorrow...

Toshikoshi Soba is a soup dish with Buckwheat Noodles and we eat it on New Year's Eve. We do a lot of things for Good Luck so this is one of them... So good luck for the next year kind of thing.
This is what I made for our this year's Toshikoshi Soba... It was very yummy in case you are wondering...:-)

Our New Year's Day is very big and takes place of Christmas Day here... so when we get up in the morning we(Children) go to their parents and say "Akemasite Omedetou(Happy New Year)!" and the parents will give each child a small envelop containing money... We call it "Otoshidama" The amount varies by age and we would give Madison probably $5 to start and it will increase every year and the amount could be quite significant by the time you are in high school or college... And don't forget Otoshidama comes from Grand parents and other relatives also! For the first a few years my parents had put the money in my college fund but after I learned to use money and buy things I got to keep some of the money then later on all of it:-) I used to love this day but not as much now obviously I am no longer on the receiving end but the giving end... Oh well it will still be fun to give Otoshidama to Madison:-) I was hoping to find one of those envelops at the store but wasn't successful so I will probably have to make it tonight myself but an example of Otoshidama envelopes are below...

And what most people look forward to for New Year's Day is to eat Osechi Ryouri which is these boxes of food... This is over the top Osechi Ryouri that I've never had but I've had similar... Each box is filled with different ingredients that are separately prepared... Each ingredient has good meaning for example, we eat lobster because it represents long life, fish roe because it represents many children, etc...

And after getting Otoshidama from Grandparents and relatives and filling up on Osechi Ryouri, kids would play a card game called "Karuta." It's very similar to a matching game here I think... We put down all the pictured cards face up then one person(usually one of the adults who can't eat any more) would get a stack of cards with words and read one at a time out loud. The matching card with the picture describes what the adult is reading and the first letter is also on the card so the kids can either go by the picture or the letter on the card. Once you locate the matching pictured card you would slap it instead of picking it up. Then you can pick it up:-) We keep playing until all the pictured cards are picked up and whoever has most pictured cards win! I love this game and I used to have favorite pictures so I would memorize where each of them were and would throw myself over in order to be the first one to slap that card. And usually my favorite cards are someone else's favorite cards also so that could always get ugly and sometimes result in some kind of head collision... Ouch!! Yeah Good Times! I really miss playing this game:-) Oh and we have Karuta for adults too... instead of finding a matching pictured card you have to find a card that has the second half of a sentence or I should say Haiku...it can be very difficult. When I was in Junior High we had to memorize all 100 Haiku sentences and compete against different classes then against each other... Really hard but very addicting. I can't wait for Dave and Madison to be able to play it.

Another thing we do on New Year's Day is to decide on a goal for the year and fill in an eye ball into this red guy(Daruma) here... Only one eye because then at the end of the year you get to fill in the other eye if you have got to complete your goal... Goals would be like "to get into such and such high school or college" or "to run a marathon" and not like "to win a car" or "I want a hand bag!"... Very similar to the New Year's resolution but it's a bit more serious and has higher success rate.
Then each town would gather all the last year's Darumas into a pile and set them on fire one evening and everyone will gather around and visit and cook the rice cake tree thingies... kind of like s'mores but much, much healthier and we eat them for good health.

Happy New Year Everyone!

Another First (for the third time :-)/もう一つ“初めて”の話

It always takes a couple times to catch something on tape...yesterday Madison was playing with Aunt (not sister, inside joke) Asuka's rubber duckies and when she knocked them out of her bath she pulled herself up on the side of the bath and peered over the edge...that was the first time she had done that...then today Mommy was sleeping on the ground and Madison used her sweatshirt to propel herself from the sitting to standing position, time two...then we got the camera and asked her to do it again and wouldn't you know she is such a good listener she gladly took the bait...I am happy to report the bath moment was not followed by such a nasty tumble...but it does make for good video and no Madison's were hurt during the filming so don't worry grandmas.

And while we are on the subject of things to worry about, for some reason whenever we mention we sleep with Madison between us each night it is often met with a gasp of horror that we will unknowingly rollover and crush our poor baby...well look at where Madison ended up two nights ago...eat your heart out grandmas!!!

Klein's 3rd Christmas and a trip into the city.../3

The day began with the long awaited arrival of the Iwai Family Christmas Presents from Japan... So we wasted no time ripping into them and beginning our third Christmas. So grab your favorite beverage, pull on your Snuggie and make sure you have at least 10 minutes to enjoy the excitement of a mother and her daughter pulling gifts from a box.

After we had slept off our excitement we headed into the city to view the Holiday lights. Here we are on the subway platform in case you didn't believe us...

From there we crossed the street to Anna's favorite Japanese bookstore, Kinokuniya, to both enjoy a snack and warm up... After that pit stop we headed toward Rockefeller Center for the grand finale...

Christmas Mystery Trip 2009/2009

Each year all three brothers and their families are together, my parents plan a secret mystery trip to be taken on the 26th that we discover as part of Christmas morning...this year we played Jeopardy to earn cash and unlock our itineraries...once we earned them they told us we would be visiting an indoor waterpark, called CocoKey, attached to a Holiday Inn in Waterbury, CT about 45 minutes from my parent's house.

The adults really enjoyed the tube rides...here Robert is in the near tube, while Anna and I are riding double in the left tube and exit first. Of course this isn't the most exciting video in the world because you can't see in the tubes...so for the first 30 seconds just use your imagination...

We finally convinced my Dad to give it a try and while it was a smooth ride,
it was not a smooth exit...that's the top of his head between those two tubes...

Since Daddy is a self-described Theme Park nut, of course we had to close down the place...we had wanted a video of us on the Lazy River, but they closed that with like 15 minutes to go until 9pm, what is up with that? So we headed to the kiddie area and tried Madison on some of the things we thought she would enjoy...we were wrong...also please be warned that if you suffer from motion sickness this video may not be for you...

Mommy and Madison are both surprised by this little slide...

Not sure what got in to Grandma, but apparently she thought this was going to be easy...

Christmas 2009/

2009 Christmas found the Kleins all together in Connecticut. My older brother, sister-in-law and two nephews live just a few minutes from my parents, but my younger brother and his wife and daughter live in Idaho and are only able to visit every other year for Christmas and this was just that such year...which made it an extra-special-exciting XMAS.

We sped up to my parent's place on Wednesday night and were very pleased with the lack of traffic on the road...on Christmas Eve we began our day with some fun-filled family sledding at a local park. Below are my brother Jim, sister-in-law Alyson and niece Lily.
Here are my nephews Carter (on ground) and Grant (standing) who are both getting very good at having snowball fights.

While snoozing Mommy secretly opened up most of Madison's presents...that should teach her not to sleep on Christmas...but we did save her big present of the year...she seemed happy about it :-)

But after being let down from the top of her present she did enjoy ripping a bit of the paper...

Madison's big toy of the year was a jumperoo...we were very excited to put her in it, so after her Uncle Jim was kind enough to set it up, we did not take into account that she had not eaten in a while so it did not go so well...

Lastly, Anna was able to find the GAP commercial on-line that Madison loves to dance to...this was the third time in a row that we played it and she still seemed to enjoy it...

Braving the cold...

Yesterday Madison and I stayed warm inside the house and watched people walk by so bundled up but today Dave planned an Alumni Game at school so we really wanted to be there to support... If you've read our Christmas Miracle blog, you know that we are not to move our car from its' spot until Wednesday night so our obvious choice of transportation were that we either take Bus or Train. And would I take our Bugaboo or Baby Bjorn!?
I decided to take Madison in a Bjorn so that she can stay close to me and keep warm somewhat... Also I decided to take a train and go through Union Square so we can visit some of the Holiday Booths that they have there before we get to school plus I was hoping to get some snacky food at Whole Foods and bring along because I always get so hungry at the game.
Well the game was a huge success...it went down to the last second and the Alumni won 74-72...there was a great crowd of students there and it was a lot of fun...Madison, of course, slept through most of it :-)

A Christmas Miracle/

Twas the morning of Christmas, in the Sunnyside house
And Creatures were stirring, one was cute as a mouse.
The stockings were hung by the tree with care
And hopes were answered, St. Nick had been there.

When out on the street there arose an open spot.
I sprang from the house to jog one and a half blocks.
Away to the car I flew like a flash,
Tore open the door and pushed on the gas.

Now Alero, now Oldsmobile, now go without fear,
On 43rd, on Skillman, I was getting near.
I stopped at the light because that is the law,
And told everyone to pass the spot by using my jaw.

And then in a twinkling, the light turned green,
The spot was still open, it was a beautiful scene.
I backed the car in and gave a hearty cheer,
Happy Christmas to all, a spot in front of our house was here!!!

So that is how Christmas started for the Kleins this year...not a bad start at all...with the impending snow storm about to spread anywhere from 2-12 inches (gotta love those forecasters) we really wanted to have the car in front of the house to be able to watch it and dig out if necessary. Also if Church is canceled tomorrow then we won't move until we move on the 23rd to drive to Connecticut so we will have the car right in front of our place to load everybody up instead of a block a half away!! It was a wonderful way to start Christmas Morning.

After the excitement of finding the spot Anna whipped up some delicious hot cocoa and we settled in to open our presents...stockings first of course...Anna had indeed up'd her stocking game even including "The Karate Kid"...it doesn't get much better than that.

Madison did pretty well but I think Anna and I may go into the edible wrapping paper business because it would have been nice to allow Madison to enjoy chomping instead of constantly prying the paper from her hands and mouth.

Madison surrounded by her presents of Puppy Bingo, blocks and a Princess Tent.
Madison also received some VeggieTales Devotional Books for us to read as a family.

Anna did a spectacular job shopping for Madison this year...unfortunately I wasn't able to be with her to purchase a lot of it so I was as surprised as Madison at what she got, but one box Anna did not know about. It was something I had purchased on one of our trips to the Outlet Mall...Anna meant to take a picture, but the video function was on so you can see what I got Madison as she was moving too much anyways to get a clear picture...

Anna and I had agreed that we would take it easy on each other this year and not go too extravagant, so when I opened this box I was both surprised and bewildered...had she really done it...she had been saying I needed to get an Iphone lately so that it's easier for her to send me Madison's pictures while I'm at work, but we had agreed it wasn't the right time...what had she done...

Then I opened the box and in classic Anna style, it had all been a test...

She wanted to gauge my reaction to see if I really did want the Iphone, but wouldn't admit...my reaction was a little of A, but mostly B so we will still be waiting on the Iphone, but it was such a neat idea...so clever that wife of mine!!

Christmas Eve in Sunnyside...

So since we will be in CT on actual Christmas Day we decided to have the family Christmas tomorrow, thus today is our Christmas Eve...Yea! We are very excited! And what's more exciting!? I think I finally succeeded in getting our stockings nicely filled. You see my parents gave us kids Christmas presents every year but stockings were never part of our Christmas morning tradition so the last 5 years Dave has been getting somewhat skinny stockings from me because I never know what to put in it and always ended up not having enough so my goal this year was to do better there... I hope I will have two smiley faces and wagging tails tomorrow:-)

Okay so on our Christmas Eve, we celebrated by taking Madison to her very first dance party! Dave's school had it and for some reason none of the administration cared enough to be in charge so Dave had to be involved... Last year I remember we worked the coat check and we did it again tonight with Madison in tow... And she did great! It was so loud in the gym but she was able to pretty much sleep through the entire thing! Dave got busy breaking up dirty dancing kids while Madison slept:-) Two boys(brothers) were quite good so we took a video...

We got home from the dance at around 10:00pm and we did our Xmas tradition that we are trying to start with Madison which is to watch a Xmas movie (this year we watched the cartoon version of How the Grinch Stole Christmas) and open a board game to play as a family... Well, I got us a game called Pictureka! and I'm not quite sure but I think it's similar to Where's Waldo... Ellie is trying to play the game with us... Madison was only interested in tasting the game board...
