Today Madison had a doctor's appointment to get a PCV shot that she was behind on since they were out of it when she originally started a series of shots. So as of today she is officially caught up on all her shots! What a responsible girl we have:-) What is more exciting than catching up with all the shots? Well, Dr. Madi gave me an OK for starting solid food, YAY!! I've been buying Japanese baby magazines and collecting different solid food recipes so I was ready:-) Dr. Madi told me to start with Rice Cereal(American solid food butI am okay to start with this) so on our way back home we stopped at a grocery store and picked up an Organic Rice Cereal and J-walked over to Rite Aid and bought some spoons that change colors if the food is too hot!(Yeah so much for the being ready! I didn't even have spoons...)
Well, she did great!! I made way more than she needed so it was really hard to keep track of how much she was eating but she didn't spit up much and seems to be swallowing good:-)

Way to go Madison! She did much better than Lily! Lily couldn't figure out what to do with her tongue, so she ended up pushing everything out of her mouth for the first few weeks! I think she liked it, but she was just uncoordinated. But we stuck with it, and now she's a great eater.
ReplyDeleteSo how do Japanese first foods differ from American? Are you going to worry about food allergies at all? The experts keep changing their minds on that account, so you never know what to do! Our doctor said to do one or two grains, and then do veggies for a month (one at a time), fruits for a month, and then proteins for a month and then to just go crazy once she's 9 months. What is the Japanese method?
"What's she supposed to do with it?" - David
ReplyDeleteWell, as Anna mentioned, she could spit it out... or she could refuse to even open her mouth to begin with, or she could swing her arms wildly so as to prevent any utensil from entering anywhere near her mouth, or she could sort of choke on it and proceed to spit up 10 times more than what you just put in her... and there's probably quite a few other options that I'm missing.
I echo Alyson's sentiment, Madison appears to be an excellent eater. Well done you two!
There is a lot of rice based, fish based, Tofu based baby foods in the Japanese recipe book but Madison's doctor said to start tofu dishes when she is 7 or 8 months and she was right because when I looked at headings of these tofu dishes it says after 7-8months... Maybe I just don't know enough about American baby foods(I need to research more!) but I see a lot of Veggie and fruits baby foods with pureed rice and dashi(fish broth) mixed in. So I'm planning on introducing her one new food(grains-veggies-fruits) per week(This part is same in both countries). I hardly see any meat recipes in my book... What did you give Lily when she was ready for that?
ReplyDeleteI knew she would enjoy eating because she was always looking at us eating and drooling:-) We all know which one of us she got that from!
Grandpa?
ReplyDeleteLet's see, I started rice and oatmeal just before she turned 6 months. Then I started veggies (starting with avocado) at 6 months, fruits at 7 months, and protein at 8 months. I'm trying to remember what I did when it was time to start proteins. I probably have it written somewhere. I think tofu may have been the first or second. But they have pureed meat in a baby food jar. It's disgusting, but that's what I gave her. She would also do mashed up beans and ground beef, but she choked easily if stuff wasn't really really mashed up, so I did mostly whatever I could find in baby food.
ReplyDeleteWow! Madison has hit this milestone, already! She really did great eating solids for the first time.
