After receiving the great news about the job and housing and after a fairly successful moving sale from the driveway of my parent's house in East Hartford, CT and after packing, weighing and labeling 21 boxes for Fed Ex (thanks again Bob and Holly for the help) we hit the road Sunday evening for the road trip of a lifetime...first stop Hayden, Idaho located just 20 miles east of Spokane, Washington in Northern Idaho to visit my brother, sister-in-law and two of Madison's cousins, Lily and Grace...but we will get to that visit in our next post...this one is dedicated to the road trip.
So our plan was to make the 40 hour, 2800 mile journey by Wednesday evening and to stop at a hotel as little as possible...mission accomplished!! We knew to be successful we had to do the majority of our driving at night while Madison was asleep. We had a very successful start as we left at about 7pm Sunday night and by 8pm Madison was out for the night...by the time she woke up we were nearing Chicago!! 1000 miles into our journey...
After getting through a bit of traffic in the city (which turned out to be the only traffic we would hit all trip...construction was a different issue) we aimed our sites on Madison, Wisconsin as our first extended stop and enjoyed a bite to eat at Chipotle's outdoor seating so the Beans could run around as well...Madison has really taken a liking to holding Ellie's leash...
After lunch we researched a dog run in Madison but were very disappointed to find out that your dogs had to be licensed in order to access the incredible dog run up on the hill...so we played a little in the park and then jumped back in the car to keep going...
Our dinnertime stop found us in Rochester, Minnesota...it was getting tougher to find towns of any size that would have eating options so we drove a good twenty minutes off the highway to go to Panera Bread, but since we needed to waste time before Madison would be sleepy again, it really didn't matter...so our second day on the road was ending and while the first drive through the night hadn't been that bad, by this time we had been traveling for about 24 hours and we knew the night drive through South Dakota would not be easy...we were not disappointed...
The first night Anna and I were able to take turns sleeping...the second night we had to talk to each other to stay awake...but we pressed on...apparently South Dakota felt bad about being the most pointless, boring state in the Union that it decided fog would be fun...and lots of it...not cool. So there we are trying to keep our eyes open and driving through thick fog in the middle of the night...finally we decide to get a couple hours sleep in the rest area, but as soon as we stop the car Madison starts to cry...so its a quick run to the bathroom and on the road we go again...instead of getting to do the posted 75 mile per hour speed limit we are stuck squinting and puttering along near 55...not cool!
So by the grace of God we make it through South Dakota with the gift of a license plate that looked like this as a parting gift from South Dakota...
I forgot to mention that at the rest area we opened our door for a second and immediately a half dozen mosquitoes are inside the car...Anna has the bug bites to prove it...lovely country...lovely...finally dawn breaks on the spectacular rolling hills and red road of Wyoming...it was the first time for either of us to see Wyoming and to do it as the sun rose was really beautiful...the scenery helped keep Anna awake as I slept.
So allow me to pause here for a moment and tell you about the two other travelers on our journey...Ellie and Coco...for the most part they did incredibly well...they didn't whine like most road trips and really settled in nicely and slept
...for the most part...somewhere in Minnesota as I drove and right after Anna declared to Coco as she sat curled in her lap that this trip they were really bonding...Coco decided to pee...luckily for Anna she had a pillow between her and Coco. After the incident Coco was banished to the floor and we continued on...a short while later Coco starting going crazy...she barked a few times and then started sprinting around on the floor and managed to go through the opening that led to my side and the gas and break pedal which she blocked as I attempted to drive...luckily Anna was able to corral her back to her side and we quickly stopped to get rid of the peed pillow. So time went on and Coco seemed better so I had her on my lap as Anna drove and wouldn't you know it...she peed again...this time I did not have the luxury of a blanket so I was soaked in dog urine...and we kept on driving...when we finally stopped at a hotel in Butte (pronounced beaut, but more fun to pronounce butt) Montana for Tuesday night, we had to be some sight and some smell...because on top of the pee was Madison throwing up on me a couple hours later...so even though we were only four or so hours away from Jim and Alyson's and it was only 5:30pm Mountain Time, 4:30 Pacific we were too exhausted and disgusting to even think about continuing on.
Finding a hotel that would take doggies however, was not that easy and we ended up at the Copper Hotel and Convention Center and Spa or something like that...you know you are in trouble when they can't decide on just one, but besides the 80s decor and the blood stains on the carpet it was a bath and a bed which was all we needed as we passed out by 8pm ready for the 4am wake up call to get a few hours under our belt while Madison slept and we didn't have to worry about any stains the Beans might make because they would blend right in :-)
The next day we actually hit the road around 5:30 and were able to make it about two hours out from Jim and Alyson's before Madison woke up...so we stopped at one of our favorite road trip restaurants, Cracker Barrel in Missoula, Montana. The end of our journey took us through the mountains and with all the construction closing the roads to one lane it took us what seemed like a very long time to finally arrive at our destination of Hayden, Idaho at 11am Wednesday, way ahead of schedule and ready to have fun with Madison's cousins...and have fun we did as you will soon see :-)
